How to Remove Someone from a Photo

A practical workflow for selecting people, reviewing reconstructed backgrounds and keeping your original.

Before you begin

Work from a copy of a photo you have permission to edit. Decide what should remain unchanged: a face, a sleeve, a sign or an architectural line near the unwanted person deserves extra attention. AI reconstructs plausible pixels; it does not uncover the real background hidden by a person.

This guide explains uploading a photo, selecting a target and reviewing the repaired result. The prepared photo-style animation explains the workflow, not real performance from this site's provider.

1. Open the person-removal editor

Go to Remove Person from Photo, choose Upload photo or drop one JPG, PNG or WebP into the editor. Multiple dropped files do not start a batch: only the first is selected, with a notice. A damaged file, unsupported format or over-limit image is rejected before generation.

The browser decodes orientation before preparing the working image. The original keeps its proportions, but a side larger than 1,536 pixels is reduced for processing. Check the displayed working dimensions; do not assume the eventual output is your camera's original resolution.

2. Paint the area you want repaired

Select Brush. Adjust its size and cover the unwanted person rather than the person you want to keep. A green overlay shows only the selection; it is not painted permanently into the source image.

Include small disconnected pieces such as a hand or a trailing bag if they belong to the unwanted person. Leave an appropriate margin for blending without covering valuable neighboring detail. A selection covering more than 90% of the frame is rejected because too little context remains.

3. Refine with the eraser and history controls

The eraser removes brush marks from the selection. It does not replace photo pixels. Undo steps back through a brush, eraser or clear action; Redo reapplies a step. History stores a bounded number of vector strokes instead of full-size image copies after every pointer movement.

Clear selection creates an undoable empty selection. A blank selection cannot be submitted. If the history becomes full, revise or start a new edit rather than accumulating unlimited actions.

4. Zoom without changing the selected pixels

Zoom only changes the displayed view. Fit recenters the image. Move mode lets you pan; switch explicitly back to Brush when you want to select again.

On a phone, one finger paints in Brush mode and drags in Move mode. Pinch zoom is not implemented. Use the visible zoom buttons and scroll outside the editor to move through the page. This explicit distinction helps avoid painting accidentally when you mean to reposition the picture.

5. Decide whether the shadow belongs in the selection

A person may leave a shadow, reflection or contact area on the ground. Include these if they should disappear with that person. Preserve lighting belonging to the subject you are keeping.

If two people overlap, part of the main subject may be missing from the source. No brush technique can guarantee a factual reconstruction of a hidden hand or face. Consider a different photo, a smaller selection, or cropping instead.

6. Submit deliberately

When live processing is enabled and verified, Remove submits one snapshot of the working image, mask and mode. Uploading or brushing alone does not contact the AI provider. Controls are locked during a request to avoid combining a new selection with an older response.

The page shows preparation, waiting, receiving and elapsed seconds without a fabricated percentage. Processing may take more than a minute. Do not assume closing the page or stopping local waiting cancels the provider request or avoids a charge.

7. Compare at the same frame

Use the Before/After comparison only after a valid provider result. Move the slider with touch, pointer or keyboard. Inspect the repaired area and the rest of the frame, particularly faces, text, repeated textures and fine edges.

If the provider changes dimensions, the result is rejected for alignment rather than stretched to match. A dimensionally valid output still needs a visual quality check; matching width and height do not prove the mask was respected.

8. Download or keep editing

Download saves the latest successful PNG at its actual supported dimensions. It does not call AI again. The next brush selection starts on the current result by default; Return to original switches the editing base back to the source photo.

Adding a selection does not erase the old successful download, but that older result does not include your new edits. Another Remove is a new potentially charged attempt, not a free continuation of the previous request.

If something goes wrong

A network failure, provider rejection, quota failure, timeout, unsafe result URL and invalid image are different failures. Read the displayed error rather than repeatedly clicking Remove. No paid request is retried automatically. An admitted request may count or incur a provider charge even when no usable image arrives.

The planned allowance is 3 admitted AI attempts per network per UTC day, shared with object removal. It is approximate IP-based identification, not a precise per-person promise. A service-wide pause can also stop AI while local editing and cropping continue.

Refresh recovery is a backup, not an archive

The latest successful edit can be stored in IndexedDB in this browser, including the original, working photo, selection and result. It expires 24 hours after that success; later selection changes do not extend the expiry. Expired data is removed the next time the tool is accessed, not by a timer in a closed browser.

Start over or choosing a new photo removes the saved record. Browser data can be cleared or evicted at any time, so download important work. Recovery never submits another generation. Read Privacy before handling sensitive images.
